Reason number 207 why So You Think You Can Dance is the superior reality competition show: It opened its most recent episode with a fantastic dancing chess board routine. I'd like to see Master Chef try and do that.
This is the first stand out opening number of the live shows, and now it really feels like So You Think You Can Dance is back. It certainly can't be a coincidence that the Top 18 dance to a song called "How It's Done" in this performance. If it is, talk about a happy coincidence.
It's pretty easy to forget just how cool it is that this many extremely talented dancers are in the same room with each other, doing their thing, outside of a Step Up movie. So when a group performance like this one actually utilizes the strengths of the competitors, instead of just making it so no one stands out, it's worth it to take a moment to shut up and take notice.
The routine itself was choreographed by Pharside and Krystal Meraz of Academy of Villains, the front runners in this season's splinter competition, Bieber's Best Dance Crew. Unless that's another happy coincidence, it probably means Academy of Villains have that competition in the bag. If not, well, they just choreographed the best number on So You Think You Can Dance.
