Starting with this week's show hosted by Jim Carrey, Saturday Night Live writer and Weekend Update powerhouse Leslie Jones will be a featured cast member. Jones was a finalist in the show's very public search for minority cast members—a role that eventually went to Sasheer Zamata.
Lorne Michaels and producers reportedly liked Jones so much during her audition last season that they brought her on as a writer. Jones has made two appearances on SNL so far, both as a version of herself during Weekend Update.
Her first, on last May's season finale, was a sendup of Lupita Nyong'o being crowned People's Most Beautiful Person. "I would have been the number one slave draft pick!" she told the slightly uncomfortable-looking Colin Jost.
Jones appeared again on Weekend Update in September as a "relationship expert." She killed.
It was a summer of upheaval for SNL: Cecily Strong was demoted from her spot next to plain toast anchor Jost on the Update desk in favor of new cast member Michael Che. With Jones' addition, there are now six people of color and six women in SNL's 15-person cast.
