Comedian/actor Sarah Silverman had long waved the banner for saying whatever the fuck you want to say in the name of comedy, but on last night's episode of The Late Late Show, she described her ideological shift to fill-in host Jim Gaffigan. He asked her about the upcoming Super Bowl, which led to a mini rant about the Redskins.
"I still can't get my head around the whole Redskins, like, they're still the Redskins? Are they still the Redskins?" she said. "What does it take to change with the times? It's racist!"
She went on:
"You know what it reminds me of? And I've been on both sides of this. It wasn't long ago—a decade ago, less—that I was defending saying 'gay.' 'Oooh, it's gay, it's queer, it's gay.' And I'd be like, 'No, I have gay friends. I'm not talking about them, I'm saying gay like lame.' And then I realized that I was the grandpa who was saying, 'I say colored! I have colored friends!' There's nothing different. Just change it! You won't notice in a week that you've changed the Redskins to whatever, the Pink Poodles. It'll take about a week to adjust your precious...what you're used to and be on the right side of history."
How reasonable is she?
