The Mariah Carey/Jennifer Lopez feud stretches back to 2001, when ideas were lifted from Carey’s ill-fated Glitter album for multiple versions of Lopez’s smash “I’m Real.” At last night’s Billboard Music Awards, Lopez silently confirmed that rivalry thrives. Lopez’s showing last night was slightly more refined than the barb she threw on Watch What Happens Live earlier this year. TMZ calls it shade, but it was too subtle even to call it that. It was more like selective blindness.
While Carey was singing her latest (also ill-fated) single, “Infinity,” Lopez sat in the audience a few feet away just idly scrolling through Instagram. Doo doo doo nothing to look at, I wonder what Taylor Swift is wearing and I don’t even feel like turning my head to check.
TMZ has the video. Here is a gif of Lopez’s engagement:
It’s sort of a metaphor for the public’s reaction to the single/Carey’s performance.
As Carey heaved a sigh of relief upon getting through another song on live television, the official cameras turned to Lopez who clapped politely and did slightly menacing things with her lips.
